Billionaire businessman Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia, Chairman of the Ruparelia Group, has been honoured with the prestigious Silverback Award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to Uganda's tourism and hospitality industry.
Dr. Ruparelia received the accolade during the Uganda Tourism Association (UTA) Annual Tourism Banquet, held at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel, where industry leaders gathered to celebrate individuals and organisations that have made exceptional contributions to the growth of Uganda's tourism sector.
The award recognises Dr. Ruparelia's decades-long investment in hospitality, tourism infrastructure and destination development, which have played a significant role in positioning Uganda as one of Africa's emerging tourism destinations.
Widely regarded as one of Uganda's most successful entrepreneurs, Dr. Ruparelia has built an extensive hospitality portfolio through the Ruparelia Group, including renowned establishments such as Speke Resort Munyonyo, Speke Hotel, Kabira Country Club, Forest Cottages, Dolphin Suites, and several other hospitality ventures that continue to attract local and international visitors.
These investments have not only expanded Uganda's accommodation capacity but have also created thousands of jobs, supported conference tourism and strengthened the country's reputation as a destination for international events.
Congratulatory messages poured in following the award, with many describing the recognition as a fitting tribute to a businessman whose investments have transformed Uganda's hospitality landscape.
"Well deserved! Congratulations to billionaire Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia on receiving the Silverback Award at the Uganda Tourism Association Annual Tourism Banquet. Your impact on Uganda's tourism and hospitality industry is truly remarkable. A legacy that will endure," one congratulatory message read.
Another described the honour as a "remarkable and well-deserved recognition" for the veteran investor's unwavering commitment to developing world-class tourism facilities in Uganda.
Over the years, Dr. Ruparelia has invested heavily in luxury hotels, conference centres and leisure facilities that have enabled Uganda to host major international conferences, sporting events and high-profile meetings, boosting the country's tourism earnings and global visibility.
His flagship property, Speke Resort Munyonyo, has become one of East Africa's premier venues for international summits and conventions, while the broader Speke Group of Hotels continues to play a vital role in Uganda's tourism and hospitality industry.
The Silverback Award adds to a growing list of accolades recognising Dr. Ruparelia's contribution to Uganda's economic development through strategic investments in tourism, real estate, education, finance and other key sectors.
Industry stakeholders say the recognition reflects the lasting impact of his investments, which continue to drive tourism growth, create employment opportunities and strengthen Uganda's position as a competitive destination for business and leisure travel.
