Kampala: It's a moment of relief for learners countrywide after the Ministry of Education and Sports announced that its designing plans to reopen schools within two weeks after months on halt due to COVID-19 Pandemic.
According to the Ministry of Education, the country is currently registering a relatively low number of COVID-19 cases which gives a fair environment for schools to resume business.
The new development was reached at during a crisis meeting held between the Education Ministry, district and municipal education officers, and school representatives across the country that agreed to innovate ways of sending learners back to their respective schools in a bid to curb a dead year.
According to the source that attended the meeting, the government’s plan for school reopening will be a phased one with weeks of accelerated studies. ''Yesterday, it was agreed to reopen schools in the first two weeks of September and for universities and other tertiary institutions, the government will prioritize reopening for finalists,'' said the source.
According to the source, the government further proposed to admit all learners above six years of age to P1 irrespective of whether they have been through nursery schools or not.
It's worth noting that by the time schools closed in June 2021, the staggered reopening was ongoing before President Museveni announced the total lockdown then aiming to curb the rapid transmission of the virus.
