‘Forever RR’: Gulu Rally Turns Into Moving Tribute to Rajiv Ruparelia

Gulu has become a centre of remembrance for the late businessman and rally driver Rajiv Ruparelia, as Uganda’s motorsport fraternity combines high-stakes competition with charitable outreach to honour his contribution to the sport and community.

The tribute, organised under the “Forever RR” and “Van to Gulu” campaigns, coincides with the sixth round of the 2026 KCB National Rally Championship, hosted by the Central Motor Club (CMC) from October 8 to 10.

Beyond the roar of rally cars, the campaign is extending Rajiv’s legacy through community support initiatives in Luwero and Gulu, reflecting the generosity and commitment to service associated with him.

As part of the journey north, the Rajiv Ruparelia Legacy Van visited Luwero Girls Primary School on Thursday, October 8, for an outreach activity organised under the “Forever RR” initiative.

Organiser Bukenya Sulaiman said the visit was intended to keep alive Rajiv’s spirit of kindness, generosity and giving back to society.

In Gulu, the Central Motor Club and the Ruparelia Foundation planned to donate food and household essentials to the Gulu Disabled Persons Union. The items include rice, sugar, beans, posho, milk and soap, with the activity scheduled for Friday, October 9, Uganda’s Independence Day.

The rally itself has attracted 32 crews for a competition covering 375.6 kilometres, with competitive stages across the greater Gulu region. The event opened with a 3.25-kilometre super special stage and is scheduled to conclude on Saturday.

Championship leader Hassan Alwi enters the round seeking to strengthen his position, while rival drivers are chasing valuable points as the national title contest continues.

The event carries particular significance because Rajiv was closely connected to Uganda’s motorsport fraternity. He founded the Rajiv Ruparelia Rally Team, competed in national rally events and served as patron of the Central Motor Club.

His involvement made him a familiar figure among competitors and fans, many of whom continue to honour his memory through sporting and charitable activities.

Rajiv, the son of businessman Dr Sudhir Ruparelia, died on May 3, 2025, aged 35, following a road crash at the Busabala Flyover in Wakiso District.

Gulu also hosted a memorial rally in October 2025, while the city council considered naming a road after him in recognition of his contribution to motorsport and support for the region.

The current campaign brings sport and community service together, ensuring the tribute extends beyond the competition itself. Through the rally and planned donations, Rajiv’s associates are seeking to preserve his memory not only as a businessman and rally driver, but also through initiatives intended to make a difference in people’s lives.
